Sure, the power of one individual Force goes down when you have 3 opponents vs. You cite Swan Song as being good, but you are spending a card to force an opponent’s card into obsolescence but putting both of the other opponents one card up on you, that doesn’t mean you 1-for-3’d yourself, it means you 1-for-1’d your opponent.įorce puts you down 2 cards to put your opponent down 1 card, this is a 2 for 1, your other opponents aren’t magically gaining cards for this, so their existence doesn’t change the net cards gained or lost. It is an enthralling debate, and one all of us can learn from.Ĭard advantage doesn’t work like that though. If dark ritual and ad nauseam are common place in your meta, you probably aren't someone this theory applies to.ĮDIT 2: As I wont be following the thread any longer, I want to thank everyone for their opinions. Once you near cEDH the argument falls apart as speed and mana efficiency rule the game. I am arguing from a perspective of 75% and below. In competitive metas where turn 3-4 combos are the norm, Force of will is great. But I feel it's just because people see it being good in legacy and extrapolate that to edh. If someone wants to elaborate why the card is so popular in less competitive metas, I'd welcome a compelling argument. And the situations where is saves a game swan song or negate wouldn't have are far outnumbered by the games where it is a 5 cmc counterspell with no upside. The cost of casting it for free is devastating in close games. I simply put the card in decks, to quickly take it back out. All to save, often, one mana over all stars like swan song, in a format that often goes to turn 8+. Two players end up 2 cards on you, and the third is up one on you. In these games, when you use the "free" mode of the spell, instead of a 2 for 1 it is much more painful, as it's a 6 for 1. In my experience, no one operates anywhere near the effeciency required to need a free counterspell, mana is always left open as decks even in the 75% level stumble and lack uses for small amounts of mana consistently. Outside the most competitive of tables, mana simply isn't nearly as tight, and the game is much slower. Take this to a four player game, that goes exponentially longer, and is much more grindy. But it remains a staple due to the mana constraints on turn 3 meta games. Even in these formats you often see copies sideboarded out in grindier control match ups. In these formats the card is worth its inherent card disadvantage due to how important speed and mana are. This seems like a relic of the card's legacy and not based on game play.Īnalyzing why force of will is popular in other eternal formats reveals a necessity due to speed and tight mana requirements. I see force of will often recommended to and included in non-competitive decks.
